Sparrow
03:25
|
|||
there's still love by the rivers bend
where all the sparrows live all alone
pining in the pine trees for what could have been
and what has always been, on their own
there's a toll it takes as death embraces all of them
there's still fight in the bruisers heart
as he falls apart in some hospice bed
he had built for her in '61, when their lives just begun
to unfold a feeling
you can't shake as death looks in your face once again
fly away now
fly away now, lady bird
gone astray now
you've gone astray
fly away now
fly away now, lady bird
gone astray now
you've gone astray

The New Colossus
03:17
|
|||
a farmer met the aging devil
on the road to south detroit
a creek, a brook drove through the temple
a rose in bloom inside a boy
we'd trek, we'd drive right through the mountains
pay was slim, but profit endless
blood was dried and stuck to contract
dead men in the morning light
house lights burned us up those nights
house lights
a winter night just west of springfield
a parking lot devoid of life
a room too cold for all our comfort
a hope for certainty by dawn's light
a post-fight sleep in hotel lobbies
a true display of arrogance
a promise this would happen again
a doubt that we could stop it
house lights burned us up those nights
house lights
ooh
I loved you so
I loved you so
When the moon sunk below the hull
we were all left alone
we were left alone
we were left alone like house lights burning from bulb to bulb to bulb

a cold march night under stadium lights,
and the school yard's swaying.
a boy up high,
a dot against the sky.
the smell of it suffocating.
a match still singing in the officers eye.
his partner is screaming for help
a desperate plea on P.S. one-three,
as the boy offers life to hell.
you were the one
you were the one
you were the one to break me, after all
his desperate plea is etched into me
his warm glow is over me now
his last words so cold, they were sixteen years old
when he offered his life to hell
now he's livin' his life in hell
you were the one
you were the one
you were the one to break me, after all
you were the one
don't be sad now son
there's nothing you could've done
to change me after all
after all.

still you don't recall the way it was before
still we try to prove our worth in more
than words could ever print on a page
to give some life to the weight
of what we're living every day
still the world it spins without permission
from all that ever is and never was
here we sit, our eyes set agaze
at this thing that we've made with our hands and minds
this art is so subjective
this art is all we have
to prove that we were here at all
driving down the road towards salvation
this place we've come to know isn't the same
ten years changed our memories,
and everything we knew has gone away.

Memory Leaks
03:02
|
|||
circling down the drain - a vial of nitrate
my darlin', I just can't wait, not anymore
scared in the dark for days,
and these memories leak for decades
dilude all the things I once knew of your grace
for I can no longer see your face
just a blur beneath your hairline
all that I want is to watch your eyes,
to breath your breath, just one more time
ooh
lost in this senile haze - a chore just to sit and concentrate
plucking pears from the tree of life forevermore
alive with a fuse too short,
a glow and a spark, and then it's gone.
But the match still flares on and on and on..
for I can no longer see your face
just a blur beneath your hairline
all that I want is to watch your eyes,
to breath your breath, just one more time
when we were young I'd write tomorrow
now I dwell on past mistakes
above the clouds; a sad old Sparrow
underground; a sunken sage
ooh
the crux of what we had back then-
not fame, nor faith, nor wage
something else entirely
something safe
(a dawnless day - a wordless name
empty bottle - lifelong flame)

Fading Light Blues
03:23
|
|||
Six graves in three years is too much to bear.
Three graves in three years I dug with my own hands.
And I'm feelin' blue on Christmas.
I'm feelin' blue this year.
Six times you died and came back to life.
We shook you until you realized
that the light at the end wasn't gone yet friend.
But still, and still, you died.
Ooh
Six lights upstairs, they burnt out fast
like the sun making room for the moon.
And the shovels came out,
even though we had our doubts
you would ever see your end.
Good-bye friend,
Good-bye friend,
We'll see you on the other side
We'll see you on the other side
Good-bye friend,
Good-bye friend,
I'll see you in another life
I'll see you some other time

Ladybird
01:04
|
|||
you wept like a baby bird on a carousel
watching as its mother just fell from heights unspoken
you sway all the way at the top,
you're sure as hell you don't want to drop
oh my ladybird, oh my ladybird
oh my ladybird

was it so bad that you couldn't go another day?
without a sip or swig, say your daughters name
before you strung up the slipknot around the beam
you said good bye one last time
to the things that matter most
(that mattered most)
when you stumbled home and broke your oath
and the vow you wrote for the woman you loved
before your skin went cold
living in parking lots, or on your tiny boat
just one glass of scotch turned you to stone
(please come home)
Just a little girl, her daddy's now a no-show.
Got a warm glow, got a warm glow.
Fingers swirled in ruby red and purple soho.
Got a warm glow, got a warm glow.
before you left us, cold and so alone
not a single note. not one idea that things were so wrong.
gray clippings on a hardwood floor
a finger painted portrait of you, and her. happy.
some time ago..
(please come home)
Just a little girl, her daddy's now a no-show.
Got a warm glow, got a warm glow.
Fingers swirled in ruby red and purple soho.
Got a warm glow, got a warm glow.
(please come home)

A Warm Glow
03:36
|
|||
there's a skull painted way up high
bristles as clouds on sky, as the moon wakes the water
there is gold in your eyes
as they glass on over while you sleep 'til dark
let loose the chain gang
let free your mind
let sway the green grass leaves
let fall your eyes
there's a way where there's a will
like hot ash on roadside spills in the morning light
a child lost her father, and her mentor to a warm glow
let loose the chain gang
let free your mind
let sway the green grass leaves
let fall your eyes

Greenlawn

such warmth we felt, such love
at eight-oh-five while the snow came falling down
we'd wake at dawn to watch the news
makeshift drums made shrimp shack tunes
and mothers love would guide our eyes
away from bad things/towards the light
in a sandbox on a summer day
on the grass in the pouring rain
in a closet hiding away from the wind that came
once in a while.
and the worst thing that could ever be?
in hindsight, it really was a dream
and the driving rain hit our backyard trees
amazed us for hours, like movie screens
six bears in the bed room, two dogs in the den
mothers in the kitchen making warm ginger bread
and the socks went missing to that old lion's mane
such happiness was brought to our familys name
and now I believe if I could change one single thing
I'd set all the clocks back so I'd never have to leave
I'd set all the clocks back so I'd never have to leave

Gypsy Loft
03:25
|
|||
don't you know that time it flows ever outward?
still you read stories backwards just to feel hope
on roslyn street, there lies a little gypsy house
where we breath, where we think we make sound
la la la.. la la la.. la la la.
old dead leaves on a boiler plate way downstairs
from the gypsy queen and her entourage of children (slaves)
that old mold smell from all the mice who've met their fiery hell
an early frost, a way for us to survive
la la la.. la la la.. la la la.
and when we go so far away from this place
who will find the glowing paintings along the way?
ten dark rooms painted black from years of neglect
a bandit crew still receiving all those fake checks in the mail
one thousand names for one single person out there
on brooklyn streets, cheatin', stealin', livin' elsewhere
and when we go so far away from this place
who will find the glowing paintings along the way?
there's writing on the walls
in words the children learned themselves
there's writing on the walls
I wish that I could help you out
there's writing on the walls
in words the children learned themselves
there's writing on the walls
I wish that I could help you now

Overlook
03:30
|
|||
You are an ocean that I'm not afraid to swim across
You are the crowded room where I'm stumbling but you let my lungs talk
You're the ever expanding sky, and all the clouds within
You take my fears away and cast them to the wind
You are an astral plane that my furthest dreams could never reach
So unttainable and yet, you are all mine.
You are the warm sun rays on a flower bed that's been dead for weeks,
and the rain that brings it back to life.
You're the love of my life,
and I need you from now until the end of the line
Need your smile and your eyes
you're the love of my life,
and I want you now,
with your baggage and all of your ties
until the sand hits the ground in this hourglass we found some summer night
there will be storms and wind and the like
but no, I don't care.
cause when the calm does come we'll be like bowerbirds through summer air
or two doves on a sunny day, no pain, no worries.
cause darlin' your love could light every light in times square
You're the love of my life,
and I need you from now until the end of time
Need your smile and your eyes (and your lips, and your lungs and their sighs)
you're the love of my life,
and I sure hope that you will wear this ring with pride
Would you be my wife?
